Quick Verdict A flat, formulaic romantic crime caper that strands Sandra Bullock and Denis Leary in an uninspired culture-clash narrative. Hampered by mismatched star dynamics and tired slapstick tropes, it rarely generates the comic spark promised by its talented cast.

Synopsis

A working-class Boston petty thief and his frustrated girlfriend steal a multi-million-dollar masterpiece and hide out in an exclusive Rhode Island beach house, where high-society neighbors and federal agents threaten to upend their relationship.

Plot

Frank O’Brien is a petty, blue-collar thief from Boston who pulls off what should be his biggest score yet: stealing a rare Henri Matisse painting worth four million dollars on behalf of a local fence named Beano Callahan. Hoping to salvage his rocky relationship with his long-suffering girlfriend Roz, Frank convinces her to join him for a romantic weekend getaway in an affluent, vacant seaside estate on an exclusive island off Rhode Island. Frank neglects to tell Roz that the house belongs to wealthy strangers and that he is merely using the luxury retreat to hold the stolen artwork until the mob’s buyers arrive.

While posing as wealthy homeowners, the couple immediately clashes with high-society resort culture. Roz catches the eye of suave, cultured art dealer neighbor Evan Marsh, who invites her horse riding and showers her with refined attention that Frank never offered. Meanwhile, Frank struggles to fit in at upscale cocktail parties, befriends an inquisitive local kid named Todd, and accidentally draws suspicion. Closing in on their trail is determined FBI art theft specialist Agent O’Malley, alongside Callahan’s bumbling mob enforcers sent to retrieve the valuable canvas.

Ending Explained

⚠️ Spoiler Warning: This section discusses the ending and major plot details.

Tired of Frank’s endless deceit and petty crime schemes, Roz decides to leave him for Evan, unaware of Evan’s true intentions. Frank discovers that Evan is actually the unscrupulous black-market art buyer who arranged the theft in the first place, planning to murder the couriers and seize the Matisse for free. When Callahan’s enforcers track Frank to the island, an escalating comedic confrontation spills across the marina.

Frank teams up with young Todd to rescue Roz, chasing Evan down before he can escape with both Roz and the painting. Evan draws a gun on Roz, but Frank intervenes, creating a chaotic distraction that allows Agent O’Malley and the FBI to surround and arrest Evan alongside the bumbling mobsters. With Evan exposed and the stolen artwork recovered by the authorities, Frank finally demonstrates genuine maturity and remorse, declaring his unconditional devotion to Roz. Touched by his willingness to risk his life for her, Roz forgives Frank. The couple avoids major prison time and decides to leave Boston and their criminal life behind for good, finally starting a legitimate future together.
