Synopsis
A cynical streetwise cop is recruited by a top-secret agency that regulates alien refugees living covertly on Earth, partnering with a veteran agent to prevent an intergalactic insect terrorist from triggering planetary annihilation.
Plot
NYPD detective James Darrell Edwards III catches the attention of Agent K, a veteran operative belonging to the Men in Black—an unofficial government division that secretly polices and conceals the existence of extraterrestrials on Earth. Edwards passes grueling tests to join the agency, relinquishing his personal identity to become Agent J. He is quickly thrown into a high-stakes emergency when a rogue, parasitic giant cockroach alien (“The Bug”) crash-lands in upstate New York, killing a farmer named Edgar and wearing his decaying skin as a disguise.
The Bug travels to Manhattan in search of “the Galaxy,” an infinite power source contained in a subatomic orb belonging to the Arquillian royal family. After assassinating an undercover alien diplomat, the Bug holds city morgue coroner Dr. Laurel Weaver hostage while scouring the city for the jewel-encrusted pendant. With Arquillian warships parking in Earth’s orbit and issuing an ultimatum to vaporize the entire planet if the Galaxy is not recovered within an hour, J and K must decipher cryptic clues to stop the Bug before time runs out.
Ending Explained
J and K deduce that “the Galaxy is on Orion’s belt” refers not to the constellation, but to the collar of the dead diplomat’s pet cat named Orion. They intercept the Bug at the Flushing Meadows Corona Park observation towers, which double as disguised alien flying saucers. The Bug swallows the Galaxy, downs one saucer, and discards Edgar’s rotting skin to reveal his massive insectoid form.
After the Bug swallows K whole along with his weapon, J distracts the giant monster by relentlessly stepping on ordinary cockroaches, enraging the beast. Inside the Bug’s stomach, K recovers his blaster and blows the monster apart from within. As half of the dying creature rears up for a final surprise attack, Dr. Laurel Weaver grabs J’s dropped blaster and finishes it off with a direct blast.
With the Galaxy safely secured and Earth saved from total annihilation, K reveals to J that he didn’t recruit him to be a partner, but as his replacement. Weary from decades of loneliness, K asks J to erase his memories with the neuralyzer so he can return to his civilian life and reunite with his long-lost love. J obliges, neuralyzing K and welcoming Laurel Weaver as his new MIB partner, Agent L. The film pulls back in a famous cosmic scale sequence, zooming out of Earth, the solar system, and the Milky Way to reveal our entire universe encapsulated inside a marble being played in a game by massive alien creatures.
