Synopsis
A lonely Chicago transit token collector rescues her secret subway crush from an oncoming train, only to be mistakenly introduced as his fiancée to his warm, tight-knit family while he lies comatose in the hospital.
Plot
Lucy Eleanor Moderatz is a lonely, orphaned token collector for the Chicago Transit Authority who spends her days harboring a silent, distant infatuation with Peter Callaghan, a handsome businessman who passes through her turnstile each morning. On Christmas Day, muggers attack Peter on the platform, knocking him onto the tracks directly in front of an approaching train. Lucy leaps down and pulls him to safety just in time. At the hospital, Peter lies in a deep coma. A misunderstanding arises when a nurse overhears Lucy murmur that she was going to marry him, prompting the hospital staff to inform Peter’s boisterous, loving family that Lucy is his fiancée.
Before Lucy can clear up the error, Peter’s grandmother Elsie suffers from a delicate heart condition, and the family instantly welcomes Lucy with open arms, inviting her to share Christmas dinner at their home. Longing for the warmth of family, Lucy finds herself trapped in the facade. For more classic romantic comedy reviews, streaming links, and cinema guides, visit MovieToWatch. Complications escalate with the arrival of Peter’s younger brother, Jack, who takes over the family furniture business. Initially suspicious of Lucy’s background, Jack spends time with her walking through snowy Chicago neighborhoods, and the two develop an undeniable, deep romantic bond while Peter remains unconscious in his hospital bed.
Ending Explained
Peter wakes from his coma with temporary amnesia, having no memory of Lucy. Convinced by his family and the elderly family friend Saul that Lucy saved his life and must be his intended bride, Peter accepts the engagement and impulsively proposes to her in person. Wracked with guilt and unable to hurt the Callaghans, Lucy agrees to the wedding, even as her heart belongs entirely to Jack.
At the altar on the day of the ceremony, as the priest asks if anyone knows why the couple should not be joined in holy matrimony, Lucy stops the service herself. She confesses the entire truth before the congregation: she never knew Peter, the engagement was a misunderstanding born of loneliness, and she has fallen deeply in love with Jack. As the church erupts into bewildered chatter, Peter’s real, married girlfriend Ashley walks in, further unraveling Peter’s innocence. Sometime later, Lucy is back at work inside her Chicago transit token booth. Jack approaches the window, drops an engagement ring into the token tray, and steps inside the booth to propose, surrounded by the entire Callaghan family. Lucy happily accepts, and the two embark on their honeymoon to Florence, Italy, fulfilling Lucy’s lifelong travel dream.
What We Think About This Movie
What We Liked
Sandra Bullock's natural warmth, relatable vulnerability, and undeniable girl-next-door screen appeal.

What We Didn't Like
A thoroughly contrived, far-fetched premise that requires ignoring basic hospital protocol and logic.
Predictable rom-com story beats where misunderstandings could easily be cleared up in thirty seconds.
Peter Gallagher's character is written so superficially that the central romantic rivalry never feels balanced.
