Synopsis

A brilliant, warm-hearted, but heavily obese genetics professor invents a revolutionary weight-loss serum, inadvertently creating a swaggering, arrogant alter ego that threatens to take over his life and romance.

Plot

Dr. Sherman Klump is an exceptionally kind and brilliant genetics professor at Wellman College, though he struggles with low self-esteem and relentless mockery due to his 400-pound frame. When lovely graduate student Carla Purty joins the department, Sherman falls head over heels for her. During their first date at a comedy club, a vicious stand-up comic named Reggie Warrington publicly humiliates Sherman about his weight in front of Carla. Devastated and desperate to change, Sherman tests his experimental DNA-restructuring serum on himself.

The potion works instantly, shedding over 250 pounds and giving Sherman an athletic physique. However, the serum triggers a drastic personality shift: Sherman transforms into “Buddy Love,” an obnoxious, fast-talking, hyper-confident ladies’ man. Posing as Sherman’s close friend, Buddy takes Carla out and dazzles her with charisma, but his arrogant, self-centered behavior quickly alienates everyone around him. As the serum’s effects become unstable and begin wearing off at random times in public, Buddy realizes he must drink higher doses to permanently suppress Sherman, setting up a fierce internal war for control.

Ending Explained

⚠️ Spoiler Warning: This section discusses the ending and major plot details.

At the annual Alumni Ball, where college benefactor Harlan Hartley is prepared to hand over a $10 million research grant, Buddy attempts to drink a large concoction of the serum to extinguish Sherman’s consciousness forever. Sherman fights back from within his own body, deliberately knocking the beaker from Buddy’s hand. A chaotic, physical battle ensues across the ballroom floor as Sherman and Buddy morph back and forth in front of the stunned faculty and donors.

Sherman successfully overcomes his alter ego and takes complete control, returning fully to his natural 400-pound appearance. Standing before the audience, Sherman delivers an emotional, honest speech, admitting that Buddy Love was a manifestation of his own insecurity and arrogance. He declares that true self-worth comes from accepting who you are inside rather than altering your outside shell. The faculty and Harlan Hartley erupt in applause, securing the grant. Carla approaches Sherman outside the hall, confessing that she always liked the gentle professor for who he truly was, and asks him for the next dance as they embrace.
