Synopsis

In a bleak future where mutants are nearly extinct, a weary and aging Logan cares for an ailing Professor X. Their quiet life is upended when a young mutant girl arrives, pursued by dark forces.

Plot

In the year 2029, mutants are on the verge of extinction, and no new mutants have been born in 25 years. Logan’s healing factor is failing due to adamantium poisoning, and he works as a miserable limousine driver in Texas to buy medicine. He cares for a 90-year-old Charles Xavier, who suffers from dementia that causes dangerous, destructive telepathic seizures. They hide in an abandoned smelting plant in Mexico, aided by the mutant tracker Caliban. Their grim existence is shattered when a desperate nurse asks Logan to protect an 11-year-old girl named Laura. Soon, the ruthless cyborg Donald Pierce and his heavily armed Reavers attack their hideout. It is revealed that Laura (X-23) was created from Logan’s DNA by the sinister corporation Transigen and possesses his exact powers. Forced to flee, Logan, Charles, and Laura embark on a grueling, bloody cross-country road trip to reach “Eden,” a rumored safe haven for mutant children near the Canadian border.

Ending Explained

⚠️ Spoiler Warning: This section discusses the ending and major plot details.

During their journey, the trio is ambushed by X-24, a mindless, younger, and vastly more savage clone of Logan created by Transigen. X-24 tragically murders Charles Xavier. A devastated Logan and Laura manage to escape, bury Charles, and eventually reach Eden, where other escaped mutant children are preparing to cross the Canadian border. The Reavers, led by Pierce and Dr. Rice, ambush the children. Logan takes an overdose of a temporary mutant-enhancing serum to heal his failing body and fights alongside Laura to save the children. In the brutal final battle, Logan engages in a vicious fight with X-24 but is fatally impaled on a tree branch. Laura shoots X-24 in the head with an adamantium bullet, killing him. In his final moments, Logan tells Laura not to be the weapon she was made to be, experiencing the feeling of family and peace before passing away. Laura and the children bury Logan. In a deeply moving final shot, Laura turns the cross on his grave on its side to form an “X,” honoring him as the last of the X-Men before leading the children across the border to safety.
