Synopsis

After a tragic car accident destroys his brilliant medical career, an arrogant surgeon seeks healing in a mysterious enclave in Nepal, only to be drawn into a hidden world of mystic arts and alternate dimensions.

Plot

Dr. Stephen Strange is a world-renowned, arrogant neurosurgeon whose life is turned upside down when a horrific car crash permanently damages his hands. Desperate to heal his shattered nerves, he exhausts traditional medicine and travels to Kamar-Taj in Nepal. There, he meets the Ancient One, a powerful sorcerer who opens his mind to the mystic arts and the multiverse.

Strange quickly masters sorcery, but soon discovers that Kamar-Taj is the front line of a battle against dark, otherworldly forces. A former disciple, Kaecilius, has gone rogue and is seeking to summon the dark entity Dormammu from the Dark Dimension to grant eternal life to humanity, at the catastrophic cost of consuming Earth.

Ending Explained

⚠️ Spoiler Warning: This section discusses the ending and major plot details.

Kaecilius succeeds in destroying the sanctums protecting Earth, allowing the Dark Dimension to begin consuming Hong Kong. Strange arrives and uses the Eye of Agamotto (an Infinity Stone) to reverse time and undo the destruction.

Realizing he cannot defeat the all-powerful Dormammu by brute force, Strange flies directly into the Dark Dimension and creates an infinite time loop. He traps both himself and Dormammu in the exact same moment, allowing Dormammu to kill him over and over again.

Annoyed and unable to break the loop, Dormammu finally agrees to Strange’s bargain: he will leave Earth alone and take Kaecilius and his zealots with him in exchange for Strange breaking the time loop. Earth is saved, but Strange’s ally Mordo becomes disillusioned by their use of forbidden magic and leaves. Strange accepts his new responsibility as Earth’s mystical protector.
