Synopsis
When a massive rogue wave capsizes an aging ocean liner on New Year's Eve, a radical reverend guides a small band of surviving passengers upward toward the overturned ship's hull to escape before the vessel sinks.
Plot
On New Year’s Eve, the aging passenger ocean liner S.S. Poseidon makes its final voyage across the Mediterranean toward Athens. The representative of the ship’s new owners recklessly orders Captain Harrison to run at full speed without taking on necessary water ballast, creating fatal instability. Shortly after midnight festivities commence in the grand salon, an undersea earthquake triggers a ninety-foot rogue tidal wave that strikes the vessel broadside, flipping the ship completely upside down.
While the majority of survivors choose to remain in the ballroom on the advice of the purser, Reverend Frank Scott urges everyone to climb upward toward the hull, knowing the compartments will gradually flood. Ten survivors heed his warning, using a fallen Christmas tree as a makeshift ladder to reach the galley. As rising water, steam leaks, and localized explosions claim lives along their path through vertical maintenance shafts and engine rooms, the dwindling group races toward the propeller shaft housing, where the steel hull is thinnest.
Ending Explained
Reaching a flooded access passage, Reverend Scott attempts to guide a lifeline through the submerged tunnel but gets pinned beneath wreckage. Former swimming champion Belle Rosen dives in, frees Scott, and guides him across, but the extreme physical exertion triggers a massive heart attack, causing her death in her husband Manny’s arms.
Pressing onward into the engine room, a ruptured steam pipe blocks their only exit toward the shaft tunnel. Refusing to let God claim the remainder of his flock, Reverend Scott leaps onto the scalding wheel of the steam valve, burning his hands while turning it shut. Hanging above the raging inferno, Scott shouts his final furious defiance to the heavens before plunging into the fire below. Former detective Mike Rogo takes charge, leading the remaining five survivors—Manny Rosen, James Martin, Nonnie Parry, Susan Shelby, and her younger brother Robin—into the propeller shaft corridor. Hearing rescue workers tapping on the exterior hull from above, the survivors bang on the pipes in response. Acetylene torches cut through the outer hull, and rescuers pull the six battered survivors out onto the overturned bottom of the ship as naval helicopters arrive.
