Synopsis
A workaholic father and his young daughter board a high-speed train from Seoul to Busan, only to find themselves trapped in a desperate fight for survival when a terrifying viral outbreak plunges South Korea into a chaotic zombie apocalypse.
Plot
Seok-woo, a divorced, workaholic fund manager, is guilt-tripped into taking his young daughter, Su-an, on the KTX high-speed train to Busan to spend her birthday with her mother. Just as the train departs Seoul Station, a convulsing woman boards the train unnoticed. She quickly turns into a highly aggressive zombie and bites a train attendant, triggering a fast-spreading infection that engulfs entire train cars in minutes.
Seok-woo and Su-an are forced to team up with a diverse group of survivors, including a tough working-class man named Sang-hwa, his pregnant wife Seong-kyeong, a high school baseball team, and a selfish corporate executive named Yon-suk. As the train hurdles through a collapsing nation where the military has been overrun, the survivors must fight their way from car to car, using their wits and makeshift weapons to outsmart the infected horde and reach the supposed safe zone in Busan.
Ending Explained
Tragedy strikes multiple times as the survivors fight their way to the front of the train. Sang-hwa heroically sacrifices himself to hold back the zombies so the others can escape. The group’s numbers dwindle rapidly, exacerbated by the cowardly and selfish betrayals of the executive, Yon-suk, who repeatedly sacrifices others to save himself.
Eventually, the train derails due to blocked tracks, forcing the survivors to flee on foot. Only Seok-woo, Su-an, and Seong-kyeong manage to board a moving locomotive to escape. However, they discover Yon-suk on board, who has just been bitten and is turning.
Seok-woo fights him off and throws him from the train, but is bitten in the process. Realizing his fate, a heartbroken Seok-woo locks Su-an and Seong-kyeong safely in the engine room. As the infection takes over, he recalls the joyful memory of holding his daughter as a baby, smiling before throwing himself off the train to protect them.
Su-an and Seong-kyeong arrive at the blocked tunnel to Busan and walk through on foot. Snipers mistake them for zombies in the dark, but before they fire, they hear Su-an tearfully singing “Aloha ‘Oe”—the song she had meant to sing for her father. Realizing they are human, the soldiers rush to their rescue.
