Synopsis
A reclusive systems analyst discovers a backdoor program into top-secret government networks, triggering a deadly conspiracy where her entire identity is erased and replaced by cyber-terrorists intent on eliminating her.
Plot
Angela Bennett is a freelance computer systems analyst based in Venice, California, who works remotely debugging software and lives an isolated existence with minimal physical contact, caring from afar for her mother who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. A colleague mails her a floppy disk containing a glitch in a widespread security program called “Gatekeeper.” When she accesses the disk, Angela uncovers a hidden backdoor granting unauthorized access to classified federal databases. Before her friend can meet her to explain, his chartered flight’s navigation systems are remotely compromised, killing him.
Shaken, Angela takes a vacation to Cozumel, Mexico, where she meets Jack Devlin, an ostensibly charming British tourist. Unknown to her, Devlin is a ruthless cyber-assassin hired by the Praetorians—a rogue cyber-terrorist syndicate responsible for the cyber-attacks that forced institutions to buy Gatekeeper. Devlin seduces Angela, attempts to execute her on a yacht, and tries to recover the disk. Angela barely escapes with her life, only to wake up in a local hospital discovering that the Praetorians have rewritten her official records: her home has been sold, an imposter has claimed her job, and her identity has been swapped to Ruth Marx, a wanted felon with an active arrest warrant. Ending Explained
On the run from law enforcement and the Praetorians, Angela turns to her former lover and psychiatrist, Dr. Alan Champion, for aid, but the syndicate alters his hospital medication records, causing him to suffer a fatal medical emergency. Realizing she has nobody left to trust, Angela tracks the syndicate to the Moscone Center convention in San Francisco, where Gatekeeper’s owner, billionaire Gregg Cybernetics CEO Jeff Gregg, is holding a massive computer expo.
Angela infiltrates the mainframe room, hacks into the central computer, and copies the Praetorians’ incriminating files onto a diskette. She is confronted by the imposter Ruth Marx and Devlin. After leading them on a chase through the catwalks of the convention hall, Angela tricks Devlin into shooting Marx in the dark, and then knocks Devlin over the railing to his death with a fire axe. Armed with the backdoor program, Angela uploads evidence of Gregg’s cyber-attacks and market manipulation directly to the FBI, causing Gregg’s arrest. With the syndicate brought to light, federal authorities restore Angela Bennett’s true legal identity, allowing her to safely return home and reunite with her mother.
What We Think About This Movie
What We Liked
Sandra Bullock's natural warmth, vulnerability, and resourceful everywoman persona holding the high-concept premise together.
Remarkably prophetic themes regarding data privacy, digital surveillance, and modern identity theft.
Jeremy Northam’s chilling performance as the suave, cold-blooded cyber hitman Jack Devlin.
Tense, claustrophobic pacing once Angela discovers her entire civilian existence has been wiped clean.
What We Didn't Like
Charming yet hopelessly dated mid-90s depictions of internet speeds, floppy disks, and graphical user interfaces.
Several convenient plot contrivances and leaps in logic during Angela's technical investigations.
Dennis Miller's brief, somewhat unconvincing turn as a serious romantic ex-partner and therapist.
