Synopsis
With the Fellowship broken, Frodo and Sam enlist a treacherous Gollum to guide them toward Mordor, while Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli rally the besieged people of Rohan against the demonic legions of Saruman.
Plot
Following Boromir’s death and the breaking of the Fellowship, Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee journey through the jagged hills of Emyn Muil toward Mordor to destroy the One Ring. They ambush Gollum trailing them in the dark, and Frodo pities the wretched creature, accepting his offer to guide them through the Dead Marshes to the Black Gate. Meanwhile, Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli track an Uruk-hai war band that captured hobbits Merry and Pippin across the plains of Rohan. When the Rohirrim cavalry slaughters the Orcs, the young hobbits flee into Fangorn Forest, encountering Treebeard, a giant sentient tree-herder.
Aragorn’s trio enters the forest and reunites with Gandalf, who has returned from his duel with the Balrog as Gandalf the White. Gandalf leads the group to Edoras, exorcising Saruman’s dark spell from King Théoden and banishing the scheming adviser Gríma Wormtongue. Knowing Saruman has dispatched ten thousand bred Uruk-hai warriors to wipe out Rohan, Théoden evacuates his people to the mountain stronghold of Helm’s Deep, where a desperate, outnumbered defense force prepares for an apocalyptic midnight siege.
Ending Explained
At Helm’s Deep, the fortress walls are breached by Saruman’s gunpowder mines, and the defenders are driven back into the keep. At dawn, remembering Gandalf’s promise, Aragorn and Théoden mount their horses and charge out into the horde. Gandalf arrives at the crest of the eastern hill alongside Éomer and two thousand exiled Rohirrim riders, charging down into the valley to break and rout the remaining Uruk-hai army.
Simultaneously, Merry and Pippin convince Treebeard and the Entmoot to attack Saruman’s stronghold at Isengard after discovering the wizard clear-cut the ancient forest. The enraged Ents march on Isengard, toppling the dams and flooding the industrial pits, leaving Saruman trapped inside his stone tower of Orthanc. In Gondor, Faramir captures Frodo and Sam, escorting them to the besieged ruins of Osgiliath. After witnessing Frodo nearly surrender the Ring to a flying Nazgûl, Sam delivers an impassioned speech on the goodness worth fighting for in the world. Moved by their resilience, Faramir defies his father’s orders and grants them safe passage. Escaping back toward Mordor, Gollum’s dark persona overtakes Smeagol, scheming to lead the hobbits into a trap guarded by a monstrous spider named Shelob to reclaim his precious Ring.

Frequently Asked Questions About The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Did The Two Towers win any Academy Awards?
Yes, the film won two Oscars at the 75th Academy Awards: Best Visual Effects for Weta Digital and Best Sound Editing. It was nominated for four additional Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
How was Gollum created on screen?
Andy Serkis performed the role on set wearing a motion-capture suit with the cast, providing both vocal performance and physical reference, after which Weta Digital animators rotoscoped and digitally replaced him using pioneering CGI technology.
Why was the Battle of Helm's Deep so difficult to film?
The siege was shot over roughly four months of grueling night shoots in wet, freezing conditions on an outdoor quarry set outside Wellington, New Zealand.
How does the movie differ from J.R.R. Tolkien's book?
In Tolkien's original text, the confrontation with the spider Shelob occurs at the end of The Two Towers, but Peter Jackson and his co-writers chose to hold that sequence for The Return of the King, adding the trip to Osgiliath to provide Frodo and Sam with a dramatic climax in this installment.
