Synopsis
A retiring veteran detective and his impulsive new partner hunt an elusive serial killer who stages elaborate, sadistic murders corresponding to the seven deadly sins.
Plot
In an unnamed, decaying city soaked in perpetual rain, veteran homicide detective William Somerset has just seven days until retirement. He is partnered with hot-headed, newly transferred detective David Mills. Their initial friction gives way to a grim partnership when they encounter a gruesome crime scene: an obese man forced to eat to death, representing Gluttony. Soon after, an elite defense attorney is coerced into slicing off a pound of his own flesh, representing Greed.
Realizing they are hunting an articulate, highly motivated serial killer punishing societal immorality, Somerset consults classical theological literature, including Dante’s Divine Comedy and Milton’s Paradise Lost. When the detectives track library circulation records to an apartment, the suspect—identified as John Doe—flees after a rooftop chase, holding Mills at gunpoint before sparing him to ensure his master plan continues unhindered.
Ending Explained
Following the fifth murder representing Pride, John Doe walks covered in blood directly into police headquarters, calmly surrendering. He offers a full confession and promises to lead the detectives to the final two bodies representing Envy and Wrath, but only on the condition that Somerset and Mills personally escort him alone to an undisclosed desert location, threatening an insanity plea if they refuse.
The detectives drive Doe into an arid wasteland surrounded by high-voltage power lines. A delivery van suddenly approaches in the distance. Somerset intercepts the driver, who hands him a sealed cardboard delivery box. Prying the box open, Somerset recoils in utter horror upon discovering its contents. Doe calmly reveals to Mills that he represents the sin of Envy—he envied Mills’ normal life and marriage with Tracy. Doe reveals that he visited Mills’ apartment, murdered Tracy, and decapitated her, placing her head inside the box, adding the devastating revelation that she was pregnant with Mills’ child. Overcome with blinding grief and rage, Mills succumbs to Doe’s design despite Somerset’s desperate pleas. Mills shoots Doe dead, fulfilling the sin of Wrath and completing Doe’s twisted philosophical masterpiece. Doe is martyred, Mills is taken away in a police cruiser, and a weary Somerset decides not to walk away from the city, reflecting that “the world is a fine place and worth fighting for… I agree with the second part.”
