Synopsis
Following a botched jewelry store robbery that ambushes their crew, a gang of color-coded thieves holes up in an abandoned warehouse, suspecting that one among them is an undercover police informant.
Plot
Eight men eat breakfast at a Los Angeles diner, casually debating pop music lyrics and tipping waitresses before heading out to rob a wholesale diamond exchange. Organized by veteran mob boss Joe Cabot and his son Nice Guy Eddie, the thieves operate under assigned color aliases—Mr. White, Mr. Orange, Mr. Blonde, Mr. Pink, and Mr. Brown—under strict rules never to share real identities. The heist goes disastrously wrong when police arrive instantly, sparking a chaotic shootout. Mr. Brown is killed in the getaway, and Mr. Orange is shot in the stomach by an armed civilian motorist.
Mr. White brings the bleeding Orange to an abandoned warehouse rendezvous point, where Mr. Pink soon arrives. Pink is convinced the job was an ambush orchestrated by an undercover cop embedded in their crew. Mr. Blonde arrives next, revealing he took a young patrolman hostage in the trunk of his car. As flashbacks unveil how undercover officer Freddy Newandyke infiltrated the crew as Mr. Orange, the criminals’ trust completely disintegrates inside the blood-soaked warehouse.
Ending Explained
While White and Pink leave with Eddie to stash the stolen gems, Mr. Blonde remains behind to torture the captured cop, slicing off his ear to the tune of Stealers Wheel’s “Stuck in the Middle with You” before dousing him in gasoline. Just as Blonde prepares to set him on fire, a dying Mr. Orange fires multiple rounds, killing Blonde to save the officer. Orange reveals his true identity as an undercover detective to the grateful cop.
Eddie, Joe, White, and Pink return to find Blonde dead. Joe enters, accusing Orange outright of being the traitor due to long-term underworld tips. Fiercely protective of Orange, White draws his revolver on Joe, while Eddie draws on White. In an instant, a Mexican standoff erupts into gunfire: Joe shoots Orange, White shoots Joe, Eddie shoots White, and White shoots Eddie. Joe and Eddie die on the spot. A wounded White crawls to Orange’s side as Pink sneaks out the back with the diamonds. Orange confesses to White that he is truly a police officer. Devastated by the betrayal, White holds his gun to Orange’s head just as SWAT officers breach the building. Police gunfire rings out off-screen, cutting down both White and Orange as the credits roll.

Frequently Asked Questions About Reservoir Dogs
Why isn't the diamond heist actually shown on screen?
Quentin Tarantino chose not to show the robbery primarily due to budgetary constraints during indie production, but also because he wanted the dramatic tension to stem entirely from the characters' conflicting perspectives of what went wrong.
Who played Mr. Blonde in Reservoir Dogs?
Character actor Michael Madsen portrayed the sadistic Vic Vega, also known as Mr. Blonde. The character is canonically the brother of Vincent Vega from Pulp Fiction.
What song plays during the famous torture scene?
The ear-cutting sequence is famously set to "Stuck in the Middle with You" by 1970s Scottish folk-rock band Stealers Wheel.
Did Steve Buscemi's character Mr. Pink survive the ending?
While he escapes the warehouse with the diamonds, background audio just before the police storm the building features shouts and gunfire outside, suggesting Mr. Pink was apprehended or shot by law enforcement.
