Synopsis

Political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability for the Avengers. This fractures the team into two opposing factions—one led by Captain America, who wishes to remain free of government interference, and another led by Iron Man, who supports oversight.

Plot

Following collateral damage in Lagos caused by the Avengers, the United Nations proposes the Sokovia Accords, a legal document designed to heavily regulate the team’s actions. Guilt-ridden by the destruction in Sokovia, Tony Stark (Iron Man) supports the Accords. Conversely, Steve Rogers (Captain America) opposes them, believing governments have hidden agendas and the Avengers need the freedom to choose their battles. The tension boils over when a terrorist bombing in Vienna kills King T’Chaka of Wakanda. Security footage identifies Bucky Barnes (the Winter Soldier) as the bomber. Refusing to let authorities kill his brainwashed best friend, Steve goes rogue to protect Bucky, making them international fugitives. Tony is tasked with bringing Steve and Bucky in. Both sides recruit allies, leading to an epic, super-powered clash at an airport in Germany, ending with Steve and Bucky escaping while the rest of Steve’s team is arrested.

Ending Explained

⚠️ Spoiler Warning: This section discusses the ending and major plot details.

Steve and Bucky travel to a secret Hydra facility in Siberia, believing the true mastermind, Helmut Zemo, is going to awaken five other deadly Winter Soldiers to destroy the world. Tony, discovering that Bucky was framed for the UN bombing by Zemo, travels to Siberia in peace to help them. However, Zemo reveals his true master plan: he never intended to unleash the soldiers. Instead, he wanted to tear the Avengers apart from the inside as revenge for the death of his family in Sokovia. Zemo plays a security tape from 1991, revealing that a brainwashed Bucky was the assassin who brutally murdered Tony Stark’s parents. Enraged and betrayed that Steve knew the truth and hid it, Tony attacks them both. A brutal, tragic fight ensues. Steve ultimately disables Iron Man’s suit but refuses to kill Tony. When Tony tells Steve he doesn’t deserve the shield his father made, Steve drops it and walks away, taking Bucky with him. Zemo attempts suicide, but is stopped and captured by Black Panther, who chooses justice over vengeance. In the aftermath, Steve breaks his allies out of a government prison and sends Tony a flip phone with a letter, promising that if the world ever needs him, he will be there.

What We Think About This Movie

What We Liked

Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans' brilliant, emotionally charged performances that make both sides of the conflict deeply understandable.

The spectacular, perfectly choreographed airport battle sequence featuring incredible teamwork and power displays.

The flawless and highly entertaining introductions of Spider-Man (Tom Holland) and Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman).

The continuation of the gritty, hard-hitting hand-to-hand combat style established in The Winter Soldier.

What We Didn't Like

Zemo, while succeeding in his goal, relies heavily on unbelievable coincidences and lacks the physical intimidation of other villains.

Certain scenes suffer from excessive and somewhat noticeable CGI, detracting from the grounded feel of the fights.

The musical score feels a bit generic compared to the sweeping soundtracks of other superhero epics.
